Costume jewelry is usually defined as beginning in the 1930s, although this is a bit misleading. It is true that cheap, disposable jewelry meant to be worn with specific outfits or costumes began to appear in great quantities in the 1930s. The book begins by examining colonialism, anti-colonialism, and repression in Puerto Rico. The articles then cover issues surrounding Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution and finally pay homage to the late Alberto Márquez, a committed island activist in Puerto Rico’s independence movement. Born on July 18, 1895, in Memphis, Tennessee, Machine Gun Kelly was a bootlegger, small-time bank robber and kidnapper who ranged through Tennessee, Mississippi, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico in the 1920s and '30s. Beginning his criminal career as a bootlegger, he was caught in 1927 and subsequently spent a few months in jail, where he met bank robbers. They, along with others, robbed banks in many states, and kidnapped a wealthy oil tycoon and held him for ransom. To establish a uniform system of state securities regulation, the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws prepared the Uniform Sale of Securities Act. Foreign trading partners retaliated with higher tariffs, and American trade was reduced by half, contributing to the depth and length of the global Depression.
